An art gallery was established in the sanctuary at the Tahoma Unitarian Universalist Congregation Church on February 7, 1960. At that time the late Gen Grant from the Aesthetics Committee established the tradition of Artist of the Month exhibitions. Since 1960 the gallery has sponsored numerous exhibitions both of UU artists and of other artists with work of quality within the Northwest region. In July of 2001 the church received a gift from the Boze Family Trust to help support the art gallery for the spiritual enrichnent of the congregation and others in the community. At that time the gallery was named the Mary M. Boze Art Gallery in memory of Mary Boze.

The space is limited to work that can be hung on the wall. There is a generous wall space of approximately 54 running feet. A space of three feet five inches in height is bordered by mouldings on the wall for hanging, but taller pieces can be hung if they are not exceptionally heavy.

The gallery director works for publicity in the local news media and provides 4 x 6 announcement cards to the artist along with flyers for the congregation to advertise the opening of each exhibition.

If you are interested in showing your work at the TUUC Gallery, or you know an artist who is interested in showing, please contact the gallery coordinator below for gallery guidelines and portfolio proposal requirements:

Christopher Mathie’s Mixed Media

Christopher Mathie's mixed media work will be presented by Mary Boze Gallery at Tahoma Unitarian Universalist Congregation with an opening on February 14 from 11:30 to 1:00 p.m. The exhibition will run from February 14 to March 31th. Mathie's exhibition, On the Water, is the first in a series of exhibitions that explore the importance of place in the work of artists. Many of Mathie's high energy paintings reference the water setting near his studio in Southworth, Washington. Mathie wishes to stylize forms into a creation that is similar to poetry. In his artist statement Mathie says, "His signature style focuses on deconstructing images to their most important lines and organic forms. He strives to capture the energetic movement, emotion and shapes essential to communicate his ideas in paint."

Christopher Mathie is represented by a number of galleries from New York to Washington state. He first became known for his ceramic work that developed after completing his art degree at the University of Puget Sound. He explored the art of Raku using swirling greens, coppers, and golds as glazes. Now he concentrates on mixed media work using acrylic paint and other media. His work is featured locally by the Two Vaults Gallery in Tacoma.
